NAKED INNOCENCE | beautiful simplicity

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 17, 2012, 6:05 PM

*Naked Innocence*
Yesterday I did a shoot with a girl who reached out to me via dA, well in a round about way reached out. When I looked at her profile my first thought was that she had quite a way to go before her 18th birthday and therefore not yet "shootable" but she was over 18 and although swimming in nervous hesitation she had a "first timers" open minded enthusiasm

I won't name her current profile, she may well end up creating another dA for modelling images, but if you were to see her current one I have no doubt that most would agree you would not find anyone who fitted that "girl next door" type more than she does. Pretty and quite cute, young looking even for 18 and the innocent baby doll jewellery smile that melts the  neighbour boys hearts

*Some Will Say Innocence Must Remain Innocent*
So shoot we do, a kind of mixed thing with some beach side glamour and portraits and then some nudes indoors. I love shooting "first timers" and the best part is that moment where they go from being nervous and duplicitous and become enveloped by the experience. Never before has that transition been as extreme as it was yesterday, she went from visibly shaking and overcome with nerves at the idea of dropping the robe to 15 minutes later being so relaxed and at ease with her naked self that she almost fell asleep in the middle of a set while laying on the bed

NB: It is amazing what s sexy, subtle sinful thing innocence can be when shot properly, the resulting images will show that I think

*The Blank Canvas*
I am likely to cop a trolling for the above paragraphs and even more likely to cop a beating for what I am about to say here. I loved the "blank canvas" of this girl's physicality. No tattoos, no piercings, natural boobs, no hair extensions, no hair dye colors, no fake tans, just a simple natural beauty without all those "supposed alternate" aspects

And I say "supposed alternate" aspects because they seem to now be the norm, so shooting a girl who doesn't have fake tits, fake tan and fake hair is now the "alternate" look. Don't get me too wrong I am not having a go at anyone it was just a nice change to have that simple purely natural beauty and for the record I generally think that breast implants are always money well spent, tattoos on girls are sexy and pierced nipples rock. But a change is as good as a holiday

*Expectations*
A minor footnote announcement, it seems that my expectations of myself and my photography have become infected by the expectations of "my audience" models and worst of all expectations I put on myself to fulfill ambitions that actually aren't mine

This is stopping now. Part of the reason that photography has been making me miserable for so long now is that I have been spending too much energy and time trying to achieve things that were never what I started this for. And it sucked the fun out of it and turned my love of artistic photography into a job I want to resign from

NB: Taking out the ambition and putting back the fun and the art

Nice post, reminds me in a way of the new "alternative diets" advocating nothing but fresh whole foods, and avoiding anything chemical or processed....i like how a natural, hundreds of thousands of years old logical idea can be "new"....well said....oh and yes natural beauty rocks....as well as tattoos and piercings :P hehehe

Well stated Brett: I couldn't agree more with your opinions on first-timers and especially the blank canvas. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only one in the art world who is saddened to see a beautiful body splashed with ill-conceived, permanent ornamentation that only detracts from the overall picture and forces a certain aesthetic treatment that is necessarily limited in scope.
