LOLITA | the bastardisation of

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 12, 2012, 9:13 AM

*Lolita*
Strange isn't it that people hear that word and automatically have a detailed preconception of what the character represents for them. It seems that over time and through countless interpretations of material that a majority of people probably aren't familiar with the story and the character have both become hopelessly lost on the worldwide web. In www dot land it seems that "Lolita" is any sexy girl who can drag out a school dress and platt a braid. In literature and film Lolita was a girl who was manipulated, used, molested, deceived, coerced and ultimately destroyed in both body and spirit

*Fuck The Clutter*
To put it as plainly and bluntly as possible it kind of gets to me occasionally on dA that so many have so badly misconstrued what the story is actually about. I want to leave no doubt here my interpretation of the story is that it is one of perversion, manipulation, deceit and evil. It is a dark twisted tale of self destruction and destruction of others, it's not a sexy story

*Keep It Real*
So when I see people on dA talking about "going as Lolita" to a cosplay event, or some girl telling her friend "so hot, you're such a Lolita" I honestly roll my eyes and think was the person your talking to manipulated, coercively kidnapped, molested, forced to live a charade, becomes something of a monster herself, enticed, coercively kidnapped again, lived with a child pornographer and then died in child birth before her 18th birthday

*The Ideas Others Have*
The Director (Adrian Lyne), Director of Photography and Cinematographer for the 1997 film Lolita did an absolutely amazing job. There are so many visually stunning conceptual images in the film its staggering. I generally make fun of people who take direct inspiration from something someone else did so I guess this makes me a hypocrite but I have embarked on a "Lolita" concept series. However what I am doing will focus on the aspects of the story that are more in line with the actual themes of deceit and destruction

*The Ideas We Have*
I planned to do this series about a year and a half ago. I had models lined up and locations etc planned out and then a couple of postponements saw me drop the shoots and not pick it back up again. And to be honest I was grateful because I knew there could be controversy and I just didn't want it. But sometimes the ideas we have just will not go away and die quietly even when you want them to. Introduce InnocentMuse who fits the character so well and it is all back on again

And here we are with image number one in the series, a representation of deceit. And in that deceit a recognition that if you touch a butterfly's wings it will never fly again and therefore becomes something else entirely

No matter which way some may see it. Lolita to me is a tragedy.

agreed, ish.... As much as i agree the internet interpretation of lolita couldn't be further off base, I do find some of the characters here in dA in that style fantastic. Also, I'm curious, are you familiar with Harajuku?

ish, it's more like a subculture scene, but anyway, it's been around for ages and their theme of "lolita" is i think where alot of artists get their ideas for the cutesy theme, as very much of it looks similar to what you would see in Harajuku. It's almost as if there's a newer definition appearing for "lolita", though I agree it's been very much misconstrued from it's original meaning.

Mate, I understand what you're saying, and I agree. I have similiar frustrations with people's preconceived notions about things both here and on the WWW, but I've found that despite trying to make the point, things don't change. The "popular theory" or more properly the commonly held belief, is what people tend to go with because no-one wants to stand up and either (a) be different or (b) take the trouble to find out how things stand. Gives me the irrits, but I'm over trying to make any sort of a difference to people who are more interested in being seen to move with the common herd then to actually think about things.

Sorry. Rant over. I look forward to the rest of this series mate.

and your 100% right on every point
and i knew all that before i posted this
i just wanted people to know my reasons for it rather than assuming it was a series designed to be sexy
i would say that people are sheep but sheep follow directions better
